About this report

The sum of all hours in an Intensive Care Unit are divided by the number of days in the period to derive an average number of hours of ICU care per day within the period.

Notes: 
Data are lagged by one quarter. 

Hours in neonatal intensive care unit and special care nurseries are excluded. Episodes for patients 28 days and under are excluded.

Understanding intensive care units (ICU's)

An Intensive Care Unit is a designated ward of a hospital that is specifically staffed and equipped to provide observation, care and treatment to patients with actual or potential life-threatening illnesses, injuries or complications, from which recovery is possible.

ICUs do not include Coronary Care Units (CCU).
