Hospital emergency departments (EDs) are a key point of contact with the health system for people with mental health problems who require urgent medical and/or psychiatric care. Admission to a more suitable environment may be required to provide short-term inpatient management and treatment during an acute phase of mental illness, until the person has recovered enough to be treated effectively and safely in the community. These units are located within acute general hospitals.
