This report shows the total number of hospital separations at Victorian public hospitals.
Note: Statewide total includes all Victorian Hospitals reporting activity to the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (VAED).
An admission is a process whereby the hospital accepts responsibility for the patient's care or treatment. Admission follows a clinical decision based upon specified criteria that a patient requires same-day or overnight (multi-day) care or treatment. A separation is defined as 'the process by which an episode of care for an admitted patient ceases'. Separations include instances whereby a patient's episode is closed and a new episode opened for a change in the type of care provided; for example, from acute to sub-acute care.
