About this report

This report shows the total number of hospital separations at Victorian public hospitals.  Statewide total includes all Victorian Hospitals reporting activity to the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (VAED).

Understanding admission & separation

An admission is a process whereby the hospital accepts responsibility for the patient's care or treatment.  Admission follows a clinical decision based upon specified criteria that a patient requires same-day or overnight (multi-day) care or treatment.  Admissions include other specified programs such as hospital in the home. A separation is defined as 'the process by which an episode of care for an admitted patient ceases'.
