Compare all hospitals: Rate of severe fetal growth restriction in babies born at 40 or more weeks.

About this report

This indictor excludes all babies without severe fetal growth restriction (FGR) and all multiple births. The numerator for this report is the number of births at 40 or more weeks gestation of a singleton baby with severe FGR. The denominator is all singleton births (live and stillborn) with severe FGR.

Note:

  • Data are sourced from the Victorian Perinatal Data Collection.
  • Data are lagged by one quarter. Results are reported quarterly using two quarters' rolling data.
  • Results are suppressed (displayed as <0.0) when there are less than 10 babies born with severe FGR in the reporting period.
  • Rates should be low and consistent across peer group hospitals.

About FGR

Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR) refers to poor growth of a baby during pregnancy. A baby is considered to be severely growth restricted when their birthweight is below the third centile for gestation, sex and plurality. This indicator is concerned with babies with severe FGR who were not born before 40 weeks' gestation, potentially reflecting poor identification and/or management. Severe FGR is associated with an increased risk of perinatal mortality and long-term health consequences for babies; therefore, it is recommended that severely growth-restricted babies are identified and born before 40 weeks' gestation.

However, FGR can be difficult to detect and variation in the approaches to clinical assessment makes this a complex challenge for the health care system.

Target

As part of Statewide and/or National agreements, targets have been set for some key performance indicators. These annual targets are shown to enable comparative achievements to be illustrated.
